Georgia Bulldog Linebacker Surprises Girlfriend With a Post-Game Proposal on the 50-Yard Line

After tricking his girlfriend into believing that she was simply participating in a post-game “Senior of the Week” celebration, middle linebacker Jake Ganus pulled out a ring and proposed to Peyton Thomas on the 50-yard line after Georgia’s 52-20 throttling of South Carolina on Saturday.

Ganus had been planning the proposal for months with the help of his head coach, teammates, family and the University of Georgia Athletic Department. The ruse was that Ganus had been named “Senior of the Week,” an honor that allows for photo ops on the enormous “G” logo at midfield of the 92,000-seat Sanford Stadium.

To add extra credibility to the story, the girlfriend of sixth-year offensive tackle Kolton Houston texted Thomas to affirm that she participated with her boyfriend the year before and the experience was a lot of fun. In a press conference after the game, Ganus admitted that there is no such thing as “Senior of the Week.”

Ganus had told his coach and teammates that he would only go through with the proposal if the Bulldogs were victorious. On Saturday, as he came off the field with five minutes to go and his team well ahead, he started to get very, very nervous.

“I’m like, ‘Oh man. I’ve really gotta do this,’” Ganus told dawgnation.com. “My stomach started getting in knots, people started coming up to me, nudging me like, ‘Alright man, alright.’”

When the moment of truth arrived, the 6’2″ Ganus was on his game. With the ring box hidden in his left hand, he proudly escorted his girlfriend to the center of the big “G.” She said she was a little suspicious when a throng of photographers came along.

“All of these cameras were following us, and I was kinda freaking out because I didn’t know what was going on,” Thomas told Bleacher Report. “He grabbed my hand and started telling me how much that he loved me, and I started crying because I knew what was happening and it hit me all at once.”

Then the strapping 230-pound defensive dynamo, still wearing football gear, settled down on one knee and proposed to the girl he’s loved since their high school days in Chelsea, Alabama.

Of course, she said,”Yes.” The couple embraced and were greeted at midfield by friends, family and the rest of the Bulldog football team, a group of guys Ganus calls his “brothers.”

The romantic moment has become a sensation on television, the internet and social media.

“I didn’t really expect it to turn out like it did, go viral and all that,” Ganus told dawgnational.com. “But it’s crazy. I just wanted to do something special for her and it turned into something a lot more.”

“His family was in on it, my family was in on it, coach [Mark] Richt was in on it, the players were in on it,” Thomas said. “I had no idea.”

The couple is planning a July 2016 wedding.

Style Guide: Antique Style Engagement Rings

Traditionally, an Antique-style ring describes any ring in a style that’s over 100 years old – so, the turn of the 20th century for us today. The early 1900’s saw a revolution of different design options for the traditional engagement ring, including the inclusion of what’s become known as piercing. Piercing is the practice of creating gaps and holes in the band for stylistic purposes, which itself would evolve into unique styles all its own such as split-shank.

Chief Designer Koorosh Daneshgar recently designed one such piece, a beautiful platinum band with dozens of small diamonds dotted around it. What emphasizes this ring as a vintage style, along with the piercing along the sides of the center stone, is the intricate nature of the hand engraving along the top and inside of the band.

“This piece seems like it would be difficult, but the challenge was a lot of fun actually,” says Koorosh. “It’s not often that I get to focus on the details of a ring on such a scale.” Antique style rings are typically wider than the ‘traditional’ solitaire engagement ring, as well as more lavish and luxurious. They reflect upon a time of beautiful detail when work was done entirely by hand, along with all the freedom and imperfections that comes with it, rather than by computer-aided design that most rings today are modeled with.

Cody’s Proposal – He’ll Get a Ring Too!

It’s not every day that you get to witness a proposal, but Cody was kind enough to invite us (and, well, the rest of Youtube) into his living room for his Christmas-morning engagement. His engagement is certainly creative enough, but what’s truly unique is his about-to-be-fiancée’s reaction to it! If you haven’t seen it already, check out the video below:

Cody starts off by giving her the proposal present, a giant box filled with cardboard letters. She begins to read out each letter in turn, quickly getting through W-I-L-L before piecing the rest together at the start of “Y-O-U.” Her sobs of joy are truly heartfelt, and she can’t even control herself as Cody tries to make his proposal speech! Thankfully, Cody quickly gets to the important question, resulting in a truly loving – if tearful – embrace.

It really hits you in the gut to watch, but it’s undoubtedly cute. And it’s certainly something that they’ll be talking about for the rest of their lives (together!) “That’s exactly the kind of reaction we want someone to have with an engagement,” said Koorosh Daneshgar, CEO and Chief Designer of Wedding Bands & Co. “An engagement is 25% the ring, and 75% the execution behind it!” Koorosh loved the video so much, in fact, that he and the rest of Wedding Bands want to reach out to Cody and offer him a gold men’s wedding band in return for making his fiancée’s Christmas one that she’ll never be able to forget.
